They saw something in me that I didn't really see in myself.” PLAY AT 2:45“Sometimes all kids need is a coach that believes in them, or someone that can give them that extra motivation and channel their effort and their energy in the right direction.” PLAY AT 3:13CHAPTERS0:00From the Business World to Coaching: A Family Tradition1:27Private Hurdle Lessons Grew Into a 15-Kid Side Business2:15Mentors Made a State Champion; Now He Pays It ForwardTRANSCRIPTHide −0:00my name is Randy Bera and I am a teacher and Coach here at Rockwell High School I'm an assistant football and track coach this is my fourth year in the profession I spent some time in the business industry before I got into teaching and coaching how I got all started um into coaching was through my family my dad's been a coach Forever This is year 40 for him my sister is a head volleyball coach she started got her first head job at 24 years old and I0:25took a little more non-traditional route as far as going to the business world first and and then now getting into coaching my mom's a teacher she's been a teacher forever she's nearing retirement as well and you know that's all I really known and I thought I was going to be different than everybody else and go the business route and and that didn't that didn't pan out the way I expected it to but what it did is it showed me that once you follow your heart and your true0:48passion you really don't have to work like I I I love what I do it's an immense part of my life and I think that's been the best part about coaching is I'm able to immerse myself in the school culture uh in the culture of the coaching office in the culture of the community and being able to do that being able to be an active member of your community it reflects you know your kids see the effort that you put in going to games and and even if it's not1:14a sport that you teach your coach the kids know that the community sees it and they respect you a little bit more for that and I'd say that's one of the reasons I got into coaching was was for the sense of community that we have in the profession but then how I started coaching was coaching privately and I did private hurdle lessons in the San Antonio area and my college coach is the one my college track coach at UTSA is the one that got me set up with a couple1:41of kids that were looking to just you know spend an extra hour or two during the week with the hurdles and I was able to do that and I kind of grew that business to where I had about 14 or 15 kids at one point and then I caught myself with my 9 to5 you know hurrying home so I can get ready for track practice and you know hurrying over to work so I can get my day over with so I could you know get to track practice so2:05track was always on my mind and then at the end of the day all I did all that really did was create an opportunity for kids that that a coach created for me you know my coach one of my coaching mentors well two of my coaching mentors coach Harvey noola and F amre they've been a tremendous part of this journey for me aside from my family obviously you know that goes without saying but those coaches invested a lot of time in me as an athlete and I was able to2:32travel the country you know go to track meets here I ran division one track I was a state champion in high school in the hurdles in the 300 meter hurdles and and walked away from the state meet after my senior year with four medals for my junior and my senior year and it's because coaches invested a lot of time and a lot of effort into me and they saw something in me that I I didn't really see in myself they saw the drive that I had and they just kind of along2:54with the help of my family and and close friends they honed it in and I was able to do things I never thought I was going to be able to do race against people who are competing in the Olympics and it's just been a dream come true what I was able to do and now I get to be in the position where I get to create those same opportunities for kids because every that's all sometimes kids need is is a coach that believes in them or3:18someone that can give them that extra motivation or kind of Channel their effort and their energy in the right directions and that's really all I'm trying to do here with what I'm doing and maybe one day a kid gets to go somewhere and get to travel to a different state that they've never been to compete or it's on the football field play against somebody that might make it to the league or be a kid that makes it to the league and it's just been a big3:37blessing and I'm really thankful that I'm in this position
