So you've got to put your boots on, strap them up, put your hard hat on, and go to work every day.” PLAY AT 1:44CHAPTERS0:00Losing a Player at 24: The Call That Changed His Coaching1:25Coach Hoffman's Lesson: Hard to Get Better When Bitter2:11Work in the Middle: It's Hard to Hide GreatnessTRANSCRIPTHide −0:00how you doing this is coach Hopkins from Umble High School um I want to talk about a kid that impacted my life Mr Johnson my FR year coaching at the age of 24 years old I was coaching at tler Junior College and it was a kid this this specific person touched my life and mold the way that I coach today because not only did I recruit this kid not only did I take this kid under my wing important to this kid but I also was given responsibility by my president by0:30my head football coach my athletic director when his life ended shortly and I had to call the parents so at the age of 24 I was at a crossroad of is this really for me but also not only is it really for me I want to be impactful beyond the game of football within your first you know year of coaching first few months not even full year that you have to make a phone call with someone that you grew close with the family grew close with and let them know their their0:56baby was no longer with us so it it molded everything to this point of how I love kids and and how I want to be impactful in their life because when it's gone it's gone and and it's hard to determine when that time is that's why you have to wake up every day with your hair on fire with your faith grinded in you and share a lot of love and understand that we are here to just be just just be the salt of the earth and1:22do the do the Lord's work and I think about Coach Hoffman um who just retired congratulations from Mark who w several state championships who coached me in high school he taught me the art of um competing for everything competing for everything in life I was a returning starter they came in crack of Texas and um he didn't start me and I pouted and I learned and I learned a very very valuable lesson it's hard to get better when you bitter so you got to put your1:48boots on you got to strap them up put your hard hat on and go to work every day and those are things the small lessons that I've learned about being committed getting out your feelings and and and can you stay true to a goal or stay true to a task even when you don't get the results at the end how committed are you you know everybody's excited at the front of end of of of a task and everybody excited when they see you know the the the beacon of light at the end2:11of the tunnel but how do you how do you work in the middle how do you work when no one is around how do you work in in a dark cold and you trying to mold these diamonds and and and do do your best the best thing I can tell you just keep your head down and uh and keep working and if you're good they'll find you it's hard it's hard to hide greatness and again this is coach Peter Hopkins at Umble High School
